The bonding momentum just picked up in the second semester and we did something that no batch had done before - organize a workshop on various topics. Suresh (Potti) came up with this idea and all of us, without exception, rallied behind him. I should say it was a brilliant idea and the execution near perfect.
I had two responsibilities - invite Prof. Ramamurthy of ASCI to speak on Hire Purchase and Leasing industry, unaware that is where I will begin my career, and tie a tie for some of us folks !!! 2 days went by and the workshop ended on a successful note. We managed to get few sponsorships that provided funds for food and mementos.
It was the latter half of the semester that we heard the bad news - our new building was ready and we have to move in June. We thought of all the MA English girls, the separation and heart breaks. It was also tragic in that we lost one of our classmates to an accident (cant recollect his name but his face is still fresh. He was a hostelier, tall and always smiling).
Amar's yellow Vespa needs a special mention for two reasons. 1. The nickname it earned - Taxi and 2. you had to ask for the keys and Amar would simply hand it over no matter if you knew how to ride or not. A case in point was me !!!
Hot Sams and chai under the tree was a routine. 1 by 2 was the norm. Swatting the flies while gobbling or gulping the items became second nature. The lounge with its TT and Carrom Board became the first and final stop while attending classes in between.
Exams came and went by and Amar volunteered all of us in the Library move to the new building during the summer break thus saving some money for the univ. We broke for the holidays promising to reassemble with built up muscles for the library move. Suresh's idol/mentor Prof. Janardhana Rao retired. BTV and Balaji were simply outstanding and we all bid good-bye to the first year together.
Next: New building, new ideas....

salute your memory.
I remember the move to the new building. We all had to carry the stuff on our backs, bikes and cars.

Hey Mani.. Good one.. The Guy who died in that accident was 'Lava Kumar' Talking of the shift of books -- it is a great feel-- even after 24 yrs.. The 'Upma'(I vaguely remember)that Vindhya got... We did hire trucks.. A photo of the line that moved books from the truck to the first floor would have been great... Sure we did not think of Internet, or Blogs then.. We also moved the furniture of most Faculty Members.. EGP was a great source of help...By the way LN (Prof. Lakshmi Narain---- for those whose memories are ------) is still active and is heard around B School Lecture circuits
Amazing memory....Mani
Raja Lava Kumar, he was the guy who died trying to get into a running bus near RTC cross roads...very sad and intense moment for me.
Yes, amazing memory Mani! looks like you are getting younger as the days roll by.
btw, what happened to the silver jubilee plans?
Suresh and Ravi seem to be having better memory than i do - they remember Lava Kumar. Yes, I plan to write about EGP and the third semester in my next post.
Awesome.
As usual, I must have been hanging around town...cos I missed this completely.
No remembrances of any upma/ shifting/ Amar/ etc.
But I do remember, when I walked into the new building, it was more interesting to sit under the trees outside than inside the class rooms.
Also, when I did go into the class, my seating was not very comfortable. And the view was not great!
Nevertheless, I still managed to make friends and retain some of them. Happy & Proud of the same.
Hopefully will keep discovering more...
Ramesh
